Root Planing and Scaling: An Effective and Non-Invasive Gum Disease Treatment By Andrew Mortensen, DDS on November 01, 2014

Young man with an unblemished smileWhile most people are aware of the potential effects of poor oral hygiene on the teeth, not as many people are familiar with the effects of poor oral hygiene on the gums. When plaque and tartar are allowed to build up on the teeth, the gums are affected as well, resulting in swelling, irritation, the creation of periodontal pockets, and possibly infection. Together, these are the symptoms of periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease. Restorative dentistry treatments address dental problems and restore the health of the teeth and gums. When signs of gum disease are present, we offer our Fountain Valley patients root planing and scaling, a restorative dentistry treatment that is conservative in technique, but effective in combating the symptoms of gum disease.

Treatment

Root scaling and planing is a non-invasive gum disease treatment that has proven effective in treating the various stages of gum disease. While it is especially effective for patients who are experiencing the initial stages of gum disease, even those with more advanced symptoms may be able to restore gum health and avoid oral surgery by undergoing root planing and scaling treatment.

Root planing and scaling is a deep cleaning of the teeth that allows Dr. Mortensen to remove plaque and calculus (also known as tartar) from the teeth. While traditional dental cleaning techniques are effective in cleaning the teeth up to the gum line, root planing and scaling reaches all the way down the root of the tooth. Using a combination of ultrasonic tools and hand tools, sticky plaque and hard, built-on tartar are scraped off and rinsed away from the surface of the teeth. Because plaque and tartar adhere more easily to rough, uneven portions of the tooth, this procedure also involves planing, which is a technique that treats rough spots on the surface of the tooth and its roots, creating a smoother, more even surface.

Recovery

Root planing and scaling is a non-invasive procedure that involves a short and comfortable recovery. The gums may feel slightly tender for the first few days after treatment and the teeth may experience heightened sensitivity as well. It is important to resume regular oral hygiene habits immediately after treatment, as this will help to ensure that bacteria is not able to get beneath the gum line, causing further oral health problems. Patients may also be asked to use an anti-bacterial rinse for a couple of weeks following treatment so that we can feel confident that all harmful bacteria have been eliminated from the teeth and gums.
