Inlays and Onlays Fountain Valley
At Andrew G. Mortensen DDS, we are proud to offer inlays and onlays to Fountain Valley and Orange County residents. In many instances, our patients suffer from relatively minor dental complications, and do not require dental crowns, dental bridges, or porcelain veneers to restore the appearance and functionality of their smile. In such cases, it may be possible to use inlays or onlays to improve their dental health.
Ideal for treating small cavities, missing cusps, or cuspal fractures, inlays and onlays are fillings that can be used to plug damaged sections of a tooth. Though amalgam, gold, and silver have been used in the past for such dental treatments, we employ porcelain at our dental practice for the benefit of our patients, as it is both natural-looking and safe. If you believe you may be a good candidate for inlays or onlays, contact our Fountain Valley dental office today.
Benefits of Inlays and Onlays
Cavities, cuspal fractures, and dental cusps that have deteriorated over time can all benefit from inlays or onlays. A filling manufactured and molded from porcelain or resin, inlays and onlays are shaped in such a way that they fit perfectly over the affected area of the tooth. This precise fit prevents further deterioration of the tooth, and provides full functionality, as the inlay or onlay restores the tooth's original shape. Because the inlays and onlays that we utilize at our Fountain Valley practice are made from porcelain, our patients enjoy natural-looking and inconspicuous dental prosthetics that provide long-term benefits. An additional benefit of porcelain inlays and onlays over the traditional amalgam prosthetics is that they are free of toxins which can cause harm to the body.
Placing Inlays and Onlays
To place inlays or onlays, we first take a mold of the patient's mouth, specifically the affected tooth or teeth. The inlays and onlays are then fabricated in a dental laboratory based on the dental molds. Silver and gold can both be used for crafting inlays and onlays, but at our Fountain Valley dental practice in OrangeCounty, we prefer to use porcelain as it is completely inconspicuous inside the mouth and provides a natural-looking smile. Once the inlays or onlays are complete, they are placed inside the mouth over the affected area of the tooth and bonded into place with dental cement.
