Sedation Dentistry

Have you put off receiving important dental visits because of your dental phobia? You aren't alone. Sedation dentistry has allowed anxious dental patients to receive much-needed care in complete comfort.

Andrew G. Mortensen, DDS, administers oral conscious sedation so Huntington Beach, CA, patients can enjoy a worry-free dental experience.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the practice of using different methods to relax a patient during their dental visit. Unlike local anesthesia, which is used to numb the treatment area, sedation dentistry is used to calm the mind for a more relaxing procedure. The sedation method can be combined with local anesthesia for a virtually painless procedure.

Dental Anxiety Is Common

50-80% of adults in the U.S. have dental anxiety

*According to the Journal of Dental Hygiene

Dental anxiety and phobia impact more people than many realize. Sometimes, even the thought of visiting the dentist for a simple exam can cause people to avoid receiving the care they need to maintain optimal oral health and function. In some cases, bad experiences with a previous dentist can cause this fear. We strive to ensure judgment-free and compassionate care for every patient who walks through our doors in Huntington Beach. Sedation dentistry is just one way we can help even the most anxious patient remain comfortable and relaxed during their treatments.

Dr. Mortensen Discusses Sedation Dentistry

Poor oral health can affect the look of your smile, the condition of your teeth, and even the health of your heart and other organs. Dr. Mortensen offers oral conscious sedation to make dental care treatment for Huntington Beach, CA, patients possible, no matter their reservations.

Patients who suffer from dental anxiety often don't seek the dental treatment that they need; with sedation dentistry, we can calm patients' fears, put them into a relaxed state of mind during treatment, and help ensure their oral health is maintained. At our practice, we use oral conscious sedation for its ease of use and reliable results.

Candidates for Sedation Dentistry

Dr. Mortensen will review your medical records before your procedure to ensure that you're a candidate for sedation and that the oral sedative won't interfere with any additional medication you're taking. Besides checking that your medical history permits you to undergo sedation, our dentist will recommend dentistry with sedation if you have:

Anxiety

Anxiety and fear about dental appointments stop many patients from receiving much-needed treatment. Sedation allows patients to get the care they need without being uncomfortable during the process.

Sensitivities

Patients with tooth and gum sensitivity may benefit from relaxing sedation dentistry. Also, patients with a sensitive gag reflex triggered by dental procedures may find dentistry with sedation helpful.

Trouble Sitting Still

Patients with medical conditions such as cerebral palsy, ALS, and arthritis may find sitting still challenging. These patients can benefit from sedation dentistry. Patients with mental health conditions, such as autism or ADHD, may also benefit from sedation.

Limited Time

If you're undergoing a complex procedure, our dentists may be able to fit multiple dental appointments into one dentistry visit thanks to sedation. A dentist can perform complicated dental work safely while the patient is fully relaxed.

Consultation

You can discuss if sedation dentistry is right for you during your consultation with Dr. Mortensen. He will review your medical records to see if oral conscious sedation is right for you and prescribe the necessary dosage.

Before the Procedure

The amount of medication prescribed will be unique to you. Some patients are even prescribed an additional pill to take the night before in order to get a restful night of sleep. You'll take the medication an hour before your appointment, so you'll need someone to drive you to our dentistry practice.

During the Procedure

Patients can relax worry-free during their dental visit thanks to oral conscious sedation. While you're awake during the entire procedure, you may not remember your time in the dentist's chair after the oral sedation wears off.

After the Procedure

You may feel groggy following your procedure since the effects can take a few hours to wear off. You'll need to arrange a ride home from our dental office in order to ensure your safety.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation Dentistry in Huntington Beach

Q. Are there any side effects from oral conscious sedation?

A. All methods of sedation, including nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation, carry a risk of side effects. The most common side effects of oral conscious sedation include grogginess, headaches, and nausea. If you have previously undergone sedation and have experienced any negative side effects, it is very important that you communicate this with your dental team. Dr. Mortensen can adjust the dose based on your needs to minimize the risk of possible complications.

Q. Will my dental insurance cover sedation dentistry?

A. Most dental insurance plans do not cover sedation dentistry. We offer financing to help cover any out-of-pocket costs you may incur for your dental care. While sedation dentistry can be an additional cost, it can save you money in the long run, particularly if you are avoiding much-needed dental care. Sedation dentistry can allow you to get the care you need to prevent oral health problems from becoming worse and requiring more extensive dental treatments later. The trusted staff at our office in Huntington Beach can provide you with an accurate quote and help you explore financing options once Dr. Mortensen creates your custom treatment plan.

Q. How do I prepare for oral conscious sedation?

A. During your initial consultation at our Huntington Beach dental office, Dr. Mortensen will discuss your options and provide you with the instructions you need for your procedure and oral conscious sedation. Some patients may only need sedation on the day of their procedure. If you are instructed to take the prescribed medication before you arrive for your appointment, you will need to have someone drive you to our office. You will also need them to take you home as the medication can take several hours to wear off. You should plan to rest for the remainder of the day.
